Did Ellis C. Jones receive bounty land in VA (now WV) from the US service in War of 1812?
Ellis C. Jones was born in 1777 or 1778 in MD or DE. Parents Charles Jones, Rev War Patriot and Catherine Real Cling. He died 15 Aug 1864 in Bethany, WV.
Ellis C. Jones served in the War of 1812 in Comegy's Detachment, DE Militia under the command of Capt. Stephen Redden. I have not located his Discharge Certification.
Ellis C. Jones is in DE in 1800 and 1810 census however in Wellsburg, Brooke County, VA in 1820. I am trying to determine how/why he moved his family?

That sound like an ideal question to ask an expert. You can now make an apppintment with an expert in the FamilyHistory Library to work with you
This link will take you to details on how to do that. Good luck.

Bethany, West Virginia is actually in Brooke County. West Virginia was part of Virginia until the Civil War when Virginia seceded from the United States and West Virginia stayed.
Wellsburg is actually the county seat of Brooke County, West Virginia and Bethany is another town. So the family may not have moved, just the boundaries. You can find more information about this in the FamilySearch Research Wiki found under the Search Menu on the FamilySearch home page. That source may also give you some clues as the the bounty land given away for service in the War of 1812. Look under Land and Property records in the Wiki we referenced. Also there is a history of Brooke County up to 1882 found at Ancestry.com if you have a subscription. If you don't, you can find the information from Ancestry at a Family History Library.
