Hi Elaine,
Yes you can be the first person to put on your tree, but don't need to be. However I am not sure what it is you want to correct as we cannot see a living person on FamilySearch, only you can. You should look at our Getting Started page to help you add the information you currently have.
If you need to edit your own Person page, there are edit options for all the information.
If you need any more information, as mentioned above, the Help Centre is accessed by clicking the question mark at the top right of the FamilySearch page. If you type in key words, you should be able to find help articles.
On the Help Centre page, there are topics to look through and if you click View All, there are online courses available to you.
I hope you have the information you need to begin your family tree.

Hi Elaine Although we can't see your exact tree, what you describe sounds like the normal display. The Landscape View displays 4 generations. The left most generation (left column) displays the children of the person you selected. In your case, it sounds like you haven't added any children so there will just be a prompt to add a child. The next generation (2nd column from left) is the person whose tree you are displaying. In your case it is you and a spouse if you add one. The next column, (3rd from the left) displays the parents of the person whose tree you are displaying. In your case, it will be your parents when you add them and parents of a spouse if you add them. The 4th column, (far right) displays your grandparents and a spouses grandparents when you add them. There are also prompts on the far right to go back a generation. Likewise, there are prompts on the left to move ahead a generation. Hopefully this answers your concern as it seems what you are seeing is very normal.

Welcome to the FamilySearch community. Thank you for the time you spend asking questions
Dear Elaine,
How should I add names to Family Tree?
You can add multiple versions of a person's name in Family Tree. Generally, our recommendation is that you enter the person's birth name or complete legal name in the Vitals section. Then add all of the variations in the Other Information field. Here's how to add married names, nicknames, aliases (AKA names), and other variations.
When you add alternate names, the record is easier to find in Family Tree, since the system includes alternate names in the search.
Steps (website)
- In the Family Tree on FamilySearch.org, display the person page you want to enhance.
- If the Details section does not show, click Details.
- On the Details view, if the Other Information box is closed, click the triangle next to the box's name.
- In the Other Information section, click Add Information.
- Click Alternate name.
- Click to select the type of alternate name and language.
- Enter the name.
- Enter a reason statement to explain how you know the information is correct.
- Click Save.

If you are building your pedigree, this article may be of use:
Sometimes it is easier to work from a person's profile page, rather than from the pedigree view, in which case you might want to read this article which contains general information on adding family members from the person page:
We hope this helps you get started in Family Tree!
