Whilst it is so easy to overwrite the existing inputs, this is one of the few areas in Family Tree where you are not prompted to provide a reason statement for your changes.
Recently, another user completely changed the names (first and last) on many of the IDs I had created for my relatives. She explained she had confused different generations! It took me a long while to reinstate the correct names (and vitals). Fortunately, she had not removed the sources I had attached, but it still took me several hours to put things right.
So, whilst changes to names around is quite a straightforward process, I would advise users to take caution if amending the work of others.

You make a great point Paul W. You have to be so careful that you are not changing the record for one person into the record of someone completely different.

Whilst I do not want to withdraw the main comments I made above, I wonder if there has been a recent change in relation to the comment I made in the first paragraph. I have been experimenting in making changes within the Vitals section and am not currently finding I am getting any warnings that I have not given a reason for a change to existing data! I had always found this to be the case when making a name change (e.g. changing a married name for a maiden name), but am sure (until a few days ago) I did receive a prompt if I tried to changed (say) the Birth details, without adding a reason. I'll post a screenshot (to make sense of what I'm saying!) if I encounter this type of message in future.

It tells me to go to the tree and find the details tab- there isn't one. It put in a person who is not my father

Hi Sue,
Please open the person page of the individual.
The first image shows the Vitals section of the person page with the Detail View button in the off position.
The second image shows the Detail View button turned on.
I hope I have understood your problem correctly and that this helps answer your question. Please reply to this message if you have any further questions.
Have a lovely day.
