Surname verification - Middx Eng Burials
Hello - Before I start this 200 plus review, please could someone confirm that the deceased's surnames should be blank, looking at the general guidelines, which says don't assume a surname from a parent. The example in the surname field does not help me in this case.
Thank you , Pamela

Here's what the project instructions say:
- If a surname was recorded for the child, but not for the parents, index the surname of the child for both of the parents. This is an exception from the General Indexing Guidelines and should not be applied to other projects.
If the child's surname is known, then you use his/her surname for both parents.

Hello Pamela,
I think there have been discussions about this point before, but I agree, the example in the purple circle guide doesn't help at all!
Looking at the instructions, though, I think it is reasonably clear that a child or a wife who is being buried but isn't given a specific surname should have the surname marked as "blank". In the examples given in the general Project Instructions there isn't a relevant one for a burial, but in the baptism examples where a child is baptised but just listed as "X, son of X and X Smith" no entry is made for the child's surname, so that would seem to bear this out.
I hope this helps.
Hilary.

Hello Hilary
Thank for that confirmation. There are so many entries that will be changed, I had to be sure before I started on it.
I do remember this discussion and it's good to have the reaffirmation.
