Family Tree & Relationship
My deceased husband indicated under relationship to this person that he was my husband. Then something changed and the relationship showed he was now my 11th cousin, once removed. Currently, it now indicates I have no direct relationship to this person. What has happened? Interesting and confusing!

Yes it can be very frustrating when things change, and we are unsure why. The "View My Relationship" chart displays the most direct route between you and the other person. If someone adds a new/different person to the Family Tree, it can change the relationship shown. I know of one individual who was related to her ancestor 3 different ways. It can be very confusing.
We hope this explanation has been somewhat helpful.

You asked the question about my husband relationship.
May we recommend that you try to signed into your Family Tree once more and try the following.
You can see how you are related to a person in Family Tree. Your relationship is displayed on chart that shows the direct relatives between you and the person. At the top of the chart, you can see your relationship, such as My Grandmother, or My First Cousin.
The chart can show up to 15 generations up and 15 generations down from the person you are viewing.
Steps (website)
- Open the Person details page for an ancestor.
- Click View My Relationship on the right side of the name banner.
- To display each person's spouse in the chart, click Show Spouses. Click the same option again to remove spouses from the chart.
- To display a person on chart in Family Tree, click the person's name. Then click either Person or Tree.
- To zoom in or out, click + or -.

Thank you for your response. However, I am aware of all these steps as I created the family tree the last few years. I went through all of the steps again as mentioned above to see if there would be any change, reverting back to originally stating that he was my husband. (He is deceased). As I said previously, the relationship (when clicked on) suddenly changed and showed that he was now my 11th cousin, once removed.
Then a few weeks later it changed again and indicated: No relationship found - you have no direct relationship to this person in Family Tree or your common ancestor is beyond 15 generations.
It works correctly for everyone on the tree on both sides of the family in showing all the relationships, except for him.
In the Famous Relatives section those have changed on both sides as well lately. Then the family tree that became extended with all my ancestors disappeared, different names appeared on my side (Rose family). Recently, what was there originally, then completely changed, now has reappeared.
My thought on the matter is that other contributors are possibly doing merges that are not correct. I do not know if that in turn changes the Famous Relatives section. It isn't really of great importance to me personally that my deceased spouse is not showing the correct connection to me wherever it is clicked on.
It was just confusing to see information changing at times not only my relationship connection to him but what was happening in the Family Tree with my ancestors disappearing and reappearing and the Famous Relatives changing for both of us.
I might add another issue I have come upon. That of a mother giving birth when she was 6 years old. That is obviously so incorrect and should be noticeable to a contributor. It can set the stage for doubt to set in, wondering if a person is indeed looking at correct ancestors. Family Search has been a delightful journey for me but I am feeling cautious about information. Thank you once again for your response to my question.

kstewart 25, The relationship viewer in Family Search is based on "blood" connections, Hence although you were your deceased spouses wife, you were not related in a biological way. I also had that experience, after my husband died. He had been married before, and now my relationship to him shows I am 11th cousin to his former wife 😁

NidaLewis, thank you for your response. Neither my husband or I were married before, marrying when we were 21 and 23 years of age. So there should be no logical reason that my relationship to my husband went from being my husband, then my 11th cousin once removed, there was and is no former wife as in your case. So it is a different scenario. Now it states I have no relationship to my first and only husband.
Everywhere else in the extended family tree on both sides of our families, all of the relationships when clicked on are correct. Our relationship connection is not correct.
No, a husband and wife are not related biologically but that should not change the relationship connection. It was correct initially showing he was my husband. Like I have said previously, it should not change. If that were the case, every person who is on a family tree would not show a relationship connection to either spouse.
Not only that but both his and my Famous Relatives have changed as well. What would account for that changing. It makes no sense. I still suspect contributors are merging based on guess work and therefore, information is inaccurate. As I also stated - in one of the family connections one of the ancestors gave birth when she was 6 years old?? My chart with ancestors dating back centuries was completed, then it disappeared from our chart, now it has returned and visible once again.
Unfortunately, too many irons in the fire, guess work, incorrect merging, editing by others, wrong family line inserted and then deletion has caused frustration.

Thanks Sanra. You are correct that it can be confusing when these things happen. I am considering going to my local family search history center for help in the matter and was waiting until the facility opened up and not dealing with masks and social distancing. That might be a good route to take. I believe you also have the opportunity to do a free 20 minute virtual consult. Good luck in your journey with Family Search. I have enjoyed the progress made since I joined and I can't say enough for all they want to do to help.
