What happens to sources that were attached after a merge if that merge is undone?
I noticed recently that another user has merged a PID that I’ve worked on which was quite a substantial profile with a PID they created that same day. With a bit more investigation I’ve found they’ve done this for at least one other associated PID (the husband). Whilst, theoretically, the match is correct for both merges, as they’ve kept the 2021 PIDs they have effectively archived change logs that date back to 2012.
I personally find the change logs enormously useful to further research and accuracy checking of PIDs, so I’m of a mind to undo the merge and immediately re merge but this time retaining the older and more complete PID. However, the same user has since attached a number of correctly associated sources to the surviving PID and I realised I’m unsure what will happen to those if I proceed with restoring the deleted (or archived due to merge if we’re being semantic about it) PID.
I’ve had to untangle multiple messy incorrect merges in the past, but haven’t come across this particular issue, so am hoping the community might have some light to shed. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your question. You can refer to https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/how-do-i-undo-a-merge-in-family-tree for the mechanics of reversing a merge. In your case, Unmerge will not be available since changes to the surviving record of the merge of been made, which leaves the option to restore. When you restore a record, it is returned in the same condition as it was prior to the merge. Meaning it will have the sources that were previously attached. The record that had survived the merge will remain as it was following the merge plus any subsequent changes or additions. Meaning it will have the sources attached post merge. Now when you repeat the merge retaining the older record, you should have all the sources from the older record plus any added on the newer record. Following your merge, we would suggest the you review the surviving record. We understand your reason of wanting to retain the change history as it does contain some valuable information. However, just be aware that you can also see the change history for deleted records. Just open the deleted record. After opening the deleted record, you can click on "show all" in the latest changes.

Rani, it should return to the original record. You have this question in twice, you may want to delete one.

Thank you all for your help. I posted this question around the time that there were technical issues cropping up for iPad users (I noticed another thread on the topic) and tried posting my question a number of times over a couple of weeks with seemingly no success. I received an email today that someone had responded to my question and logged on to find that actually lots of lovely helpful people had been responding but my email notifications hadn’t been working. And worse, the glitch had resolved but unfortunately had posted every single one of my previous post attempts, resulting in multiple duplicates. *Facepalm* how embarrassing.
Trying to figure out how to delete the duplicates now, but can’t seem to find how?
When I figure it out I’ll remove all the duplicates and just keep the one with the most responses for anyone seeking the same answers in the future. Sorry about the mess.

Thanks @Orr Rosemary that was what I thought would be the logical answer, but for me I only get the edit option pop up when I click the gear, which is strange.
