I am indexing death records which include occupations. If the occupation reveals the sex of the deceased (eg governess/soldier), but there is no other indication of sex should I mark the person as male/female accordingly, or register it as a 'blank',. Thank you

    Hi @kayteey

Check the Field Help for the Sex field and the Project instructions for the Project you are working on to see if there is a mention of what you can assume.

I know for the New Zealand Electrol Roll Project it specifically says NOT to assume the sex from the occupation.

If the Field Help for Sex and the Project instructions don't mention it, then I would not assume the sex from the occupation. If the sex is not on the form then I would mark that field blank.

We don't use occupations or given names to determine gender. Shirley, the soldier, could be a man or a woman and women have served as soldiers as far back as the American Revolution.
