Indexing "US, New York—Index to Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York City, 1897–1902". Instructions say to record levels of locality with comma between or just as it was written. Most of the time, only the country is listed. But sometimes an area is listed after the country. Examples: Austria (Galicia) or Russia - Poltzk or Italy (South) How should these types be recorded? These are usually areas, not cities, and usually not Provinces, Districts, etc.

I would index the birthplace exactly as it is written and would not include commas between Austria Galicia or Russia Poltzk because in this instance they appear to be the same level of locality (ancient kingdoms and principalities). I would not include South with Italy because it is a directional word and not a location. I have worked on these, so I kind of know what you are seeing. But, as @cesarnarcisotinocoperez1 suggested above, it is always best to include a share batch with your question to get the best answer. To share a batch, we click on the third icon from the right and follow the instructions or copy and paste the URL address.
