City directory batch question
Hi,
In the Omaha directory I am working on there is an italicized 'c' after a few people's names. Does anyone know what that is? Is it part of the name and I should index it? The first one is on Dixon, Ida Mrs and the next one is Dixon, John. https://www.familysearch.org/indexing/batch/9b399278-544b-40be-9fdd-9c6c9e24c34f

That's interesting, Connie. Under either interpretation, but without being able to open Ashley's batch, I don't see it as indexable information.

Hi Ashley. Unfortunately, for some reason I get “Access Restricted” when I try to open that batch. Have you submitted it already? Perhaps if you type here exactly what you see, someone can help. Italicized (or not) c. can be an an abbreviation for circa, meaning approximately, and is often used with dates (e.g. circa 1865) as you probably know. Does that make some sense of what you see?

I've been seeing the italicized 'c' in a number of Omaha directory records. I've been studying the names it's associated with, as well as their occupation. I don't know for sure, but my guess is that it's a designation for "colored". Some other directories actually use the word 'colored' routinely in their listings.
