I am new to the discussion forum...currently trying to find the parents of Ernest Mandeno Hardy. (GQ
From his passport ,of which I personally have the original, I see that his birth date 31 May 1884 in Surry County, Virginia, USA. His father is listed on his passport as Geo H. Hardy also born in Virginia, but no further information. At some previous point this paternal family line immigrated from Scotland and is thought to be part of the Farquharson Clan. Ernest married Grace Trumbull of Essex, Jay, New York but I cannot find a marriage record or date for the marriage. Any help is truly appreciated and I will share my information as well!

Robin, I do hope you will consider joining our group. But I have a George Hardy in my family line. I actually do have him in my family tree: Relationship to Ernest Mandeno Hardy The husband of my 10th cousin once removed. Let me do some research and ask a couple of the Hardee -Hardy's if they know anything that would be beneficial to you. May take me some time as a lot of the Hardy's are still signed on and in Roots Tech at the moment.

Thank you! I am so excited to find a possible connection in the Hardy/Hardee family. I have joined the suggested groups and hope I can find some more information out.

Robin, I found a newspaper article. I did a clipping so you can view it at this link. It's about Stuart Hardy, telling where he lived growing up. It looks like his father Ernest was a Captain, and a doctor. Also looking at a few other things for you. https://www.newspapers.com/clip/72286415/stuart-hardy/

Ernest was in Panama in 1919 according to passport. In 1920, I found him in San Antonio, TX at Patient Base Hospital, he is single. His military death record says dentist.

This obituary is more detailed than the 3 saved into FamilySearch. It says he graduated from VMI in 1901 and studied medicine at Germany just before WWI. https://www.newspapers.com/clip/72287529/captain-hardy-obituary/

I went to the Surry birth records & did not see Ernest. The only Hardy's I see in Surry in this time period were African American. Some of these earlier birth records are unindexed. I looked from 1883-1885 & didn't see any Hardy's. Although births weren't required to be recorded until 1912. Here is where 1884 starts if you wanted to look more: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9Y4-N923-D?i=364&cat=777933
I looked in the Cochise county marriages, where Ft Huachuca, AZ was, where their son was born in 1925. They were not married there either that I can see. I looked from 1920-1925 there.
I found & just attached the 1920 Census to both Grace & Ernest. They were both living in San Antonio, TX not yet married. My best guess is they married in San Antonio between 1920-1924. The Census was taken in January 1920. Ernest was living on Fort Sam Houston Army Post at the Patient Base hospital. Grace was boarding at 1003 Main Ave, and she was a school teacher. I looked at a map & they lived about 4 miles apart. I'm hopeful a marriage record will show up in San Antonio that will list Ernest's parents. Someone recently told me VMI has records and pictures. They sent me an 1885 VMI cadet picture. Your Ernest graduated in 1901, according to an obituary. I wonder if there is information about his parents or birth information in his record from there? When you find the marriage record & if it lists parents, let me know & I'll look more for them in Virginia. Hope this helps get you closer to a marriage record!

Thank you so much! You are amazing. I really appreciate your help! Stuart Hardy is my father in law. I sure wish I had asked him about his ancestry while he was still alive. I know he had unhappy memories of his father as he was physically/neurologically injured by nerve gas while serving in the war and became an alcoholic later to dull the pain resulting in abusive behavior towards his son Stuart. I also know that Ernest and Grace married under the disapproval of her parents and they may have eloped. I believe it was possibly due to the fact that he was Scottish and she was Irish. Thanks for helping with a new direction for me to research!

I sympathize with wishing to have asked questions before it was too late. That sounds really hard with the injuries, then alcohol, then family difficulties. I'm glad you can start finding some answers. I wonder if they did elope? Hope you'll come back here and share with us when you solve the mystery of where they married. So glad I could help with a new idea or direction. Best wishes on solving some mysteries and finding some answers.

Yes, my husband said that his dad always said that his father was a doctor but I am not sure if that referred to him being a dentist? or both?
