How to contact "record custodians"
My only source of a church's records in Italy is a Family Search digitised film that I can not access online due to restrictions applied by their "record custodians". Is there any way I can contact these "custodians" to find out if there is some method by which I could get permission to view them?

You can take the microfilm number and Search for it in the FamilySearch Catalog
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog
Usually the Catalog details will provide the organisation where the records were filmed. This will usually be an Archive , or perhaps for church records, a Diocese or regional grouping, but usually won't be an individual church. Sometimes there may be a pay website which has these records, but sometimes you will need to contact the originating institution, possibly finding contact information by Googling etc.

Once you have the place name you can use the ResearchWiki to search the town and find more information about how to contact record custodians.

Also, here is another website that has Italian records online. Some are searchable, some you only browse. There are usually helpful indexes included.

I believe these are civil records on the Antenati site, if that would be of interest. You could try writing to the particular municipality, and you could also try a search of their website. I am not extremely familiar with it, but I believe the individual registries are not indexed, but you can find some records for a particular location, event and year at http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/?lang=en There are also church records if you happen to need those for Trentino on-line at https://www.natitrentino.mondotrentino.net/ Perhaps there could be other church record databases for Italy. You can try to locate the church contact information and contact them directly. Here is a directory https://www.catholicdirectory.com/search_results?location_value=Italy&country_sn=IT&location_type=country&stateSearch=&swlat=35.4897&nelat=47.092&swlng=6.6267201&nelng=18.7975999&lat=41.87194&lng=12.56738&faddress=Italy&place_id=ChIJA9KNRIL-1BIRb15jJFz1LOI

Many records can be accessed at the Italian Archives website http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/?lang=en That said, I find more records at FamilySearch. You can view the records at an affiliated library but call ahead. During the Coronavirus shut down I called two affiliated libraries and one said they weren't one. The other was still closed to the public. https://www.familysearch.org/help/fhcenters/locations/

I am "Tagging" this (General) 'Question' of yours in this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum, to two (x2) specific 'Groups' in the Forum being:
(1) "Italy Genealogy Research"; and,
(2) "FamilySearch – Italia" ... [ in 'Italian' ]
in the hope that, the members of those groups may be able to answer/assist you.
.
[ ps: They may know of some On-Line Websites that you can access ... ]
.
Both, those Groups, are "Public", which you can join, if you wish.

The Church directory should be quite helpful. Thank you. Marie

Aren't these records similar to other digitized Family Search records that are accessed at a Family History Center by using their computer access? Sorry to answer a question with a question.....Marie

Not always.
There are some image records where although we have index records for them visible to us, the images for them are not available in the FS website, Family History Centers, affiliate libraries, or the Family History Library to ANYONE (including members).
