We have discovered new lands for the Family Search library!

Thanks for your time. Or perhaps we could some how flag these places so another person could also check it that would have power to add the place as a recognized location. Also this AM, there were a couple of places that were what they said, but with time have been annexed into a larger place. ( San Antonio, Los Angeles County, Califonia is now just Los Angeles and we have no way to recognize that either. Same thing happened to a place in Finland this AM.

Questions and requests about places are assigned to the team member best qualified to respond. Once the request is in their queue, the team member will respond in the order received and as time permits.

As far as "new lands", uh, no. That has not happened. What you have discovered is that the standard place list is incomplete.

San Antonio was part of a township in southern Los Angeles from 1895 to 1910. While townships are common in eastern states, they have been and are basically meaningless in many states west of the Mississippi River. As such, they have not been standardized (according to an email I got a year or more ago from the Standards team). In many eastern states, a township has its own government -- that seldom happened in the Western United States.

There are two entries for each place -- one is for you to enter the name, which can go as far as to include a street address, and the other is for the geographical standard in which that place you entered, exists or existed.

I agree 100% that they really are not new lands- just an incomplete library of places- but how do we get them added to the library? And it was not just the USA this AM but also Finland, and Mexico.

Please understand that you are not removing or changing any place names. You are not touching or changing in any way what is all ready there.

Here is what you are doing:

Upon starting to work on these place names I am presented with this:



Going to this person's page in Family Tree, I see that the above corresponds to this:



When I enter a standardized value as requested in the first image:





then save and continue to finish off the list of ten places then allow a few minutes for processing time then return to the Family Tree page, I see this:



As you can see, what the original contributor entered has not changed. I have merely gotten rid of the red exclamation point which designates that the entered place name has not been linked to an appropriate standardized value.

I have changed the entry from this:



to this:



which allows the possible duplicates and hints routines to work properly.

So don't worry about changing someone else's work. You are not. You are just making it so the FamilyTree program can find that entry for others.

Now, if there are places you are researching for your family and you find that you need a place entered into the Places database, the follow the procedure Tom outlined above to have that done by sending your request to the Places team at the e-mail he gives above or by posting it on the FamilySearch Communities board for Places here:
