My small Ancestry tree just got combined with a much larger tree when I put my grandfather in. But one of the key ancestors on that tree is incorrect. He is David Smith, but he is the wrong David Smith. What can I do to correct this?

When you say, ... "My small Ancestry tree .."

    .

    Question(s):

    .

Are you referring to your "Ancestral" lines in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'?

    .

[ As, we DO NOT have Our OWN "Tree", in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' ...

. We only have "Branches" (ie. Ancestral" lines), that are interconnected ...

. in this SINGLE "One" World "Tree", for all of us ]

    .

Or, are you referring to your "Tree", in another website; or database?

    .

    Please advise.

ps: We can certainly help/assist, just want to make certain we understand the big picture.

    Thanks Brett,

It wasn't "my" tree. Family Search simply asked me to put in an ancestor, and I did. I suppose it relates to "Family Tree", but I am a novice in that aspect (although well versed in genealogy and a frequent user of family search). But regardless, I do not want an incorrect ancestor as my third great grandfather. I have known about this incorrect David Smith for over 20 years and I know why the incorrect David is wrongly associated.

But I know almost nothing about "Family Tree" and how to deal with this issue. I have abundant evidence that the included David Smith is the wrong one and a compelling argument (not unequivocal proof) why another David Smith is my ancestor.

I keep my tree on my laptop. It has over 3000 individuals, with 99% well documented.

    I appreciate your help.

    Larry

    @LegacyUser

Have you been able to find the correct David Smith in Family Tree? Use the steps below:

You can find deceased people in Family Tree. You can search using the name, sex, family members, or event information. You can also search by ID number.

You can find living people in Family Tree only if you entered them into the Tree and search using the ID number.

    Steps (website)

    1. While signed in to FamlySearch.org, click Family Tree.
    2. Click Find.
    3. Click the tab for the kind of search you want to use:
      • Find by Name. Enter a name and other information. If you want to match one or more of your search criteria exactly, click the check box next to the field.
        • Including an alternate name can help you find a person using nicknames, married names, and other alternate names.
        • Searching for a birth event searches for both birth and christening information.
        • Searching for a death event searches for both death and burial information.
        • You can use wildcards in the names of people and places. Enter * to replace zero or more characters. Enter ? to replace one character.
      • Find by ID. Enter a Family Tree ID number.
    4. Click Find.
    5. Review the results.
    6. If you do not find the person you want, modify your search criteria:
      1. In the panel on the left, make your changes.
      2. Click Find.
      3. Review the results again.
    7. In the search results, click the name of the person to view the person card.
    8. On the person card, click Person.

If you find the correct David Smith, note the ID number, you can Replace the wrong one by using the steps in the article links below, depending on what is incorrect with David Smith. If he is listed as a child of the wrong parents use the link below.

If he has the wrong spouse use the following link.

We hope this information will assist you in correcting Family Tree.

@LegacyUser I have never had FamilySearch ask me to put in an ancestor. Now Ancestry has. Have you mixed them up? Or are you working on a Gedcom you uploaded??? In either way, if you and @Nancy Jean Little would provide the ID of the ancestor who has incorrect people attached, perhaps someone can look into it for you.
