    Firstly thanks for your interest. A brief history of the Bukovina over the last ca. 250 years. It was part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy since 1774 and became a crownland , the eastern-most, in ca. 1860's until 1918 when the Monarchy broke up. It was in 1920 that Bukovina was annexed into Romania. This lasted until 1944 when the Russians defeated the Romanians who were part of the Nazi alliance. For the last 30 years the northern half was incorporated into Ukraine. The capital was Czernowitz (German)for several hundred years. You see the difficulties in researching my family, Geller, despite the fact that they had lived there for at least one hundred years.

    What interests me are the generations before my grandparents which would belong to the latter half of the 19th century. I never knew my GPs - they were murdered by the Romanian Nazis in the 1940's. Now you see my problem. BTW, my father s"l used to say:" I was born in Austria, the Romanians sent me into the Ghetto and we fled from the Russians."

    I have done extensive browsing of the Roman Catholic parish Records for Czernowitz from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. I recall seeing the surname Geller quite often. Perhaps you have already searched these records, but if not, they are available from the FamilySearch Catalog at this link: https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/1384424?availability=Family History Library

    I forgot to mention that the records are in Latin, but is quite easy to translate and to just recognize the names.
