Unattached sources

When you go into the source box, we are now the remarks "unattached" I go into the sources and try to fix but often the unttached are non relatated people such as servants, boaders, officiants and even just Unknown (no name). If I then select dismiss, it says that it dismisses from "all" users. But then what happens to the users needing it as their relatives are those not related to mine?

    Hello Janet,

    Good question.

Can you go to your ancestor for which it is attached and dismiss it from the source list for your ancestor. It won't affect the attachment to the real link.

If it shows it is detaching from more of your people you should check that out. Detach from individualIt is possible it may be a good source for someone else in your family. But you can see in the attached jpg that by going to the Person page and opening the Sources and going to the source you dispute, it will only delete from your Person.

    .

    Janet

    .

    FYI

    .

    Question:

    .

Are you referring to, YOUR "Source Box"; or, the "Sources" 'Tab' for an individual/person.

    .

As, they are two (x2) different and separate things.

    .

    Now ...

    That said ...

    .

IF, you are referring to the "Unattached Sources", in the "Sources" 'Tab' for an individual/person; THEN, ...

    Short Answer: Nothing

    .

"Dismissing", the "Unattached Sources", in the "Sources" 'Tab' for an individual/person, does NOTHING regarding the "Sources" relating to those OTHER individuals/persons (eg. Servants' Boarders; Visitors, - ie. NON-RELATIVES) associated with the actual Record as a whole.

    .

All you are doing is "Dismissing" that "Unattached Sources" indicator, in the "Sources" 'Tab' for an individual/person, from appearing, for that individual/person; so that, it DOES NOT appear for OTHER Users/Patrons - but, ONLY in in the "Sources" 'Tab' for that individual/person - NOTHING else - no other individual/person is affected.

    .

Doing so has NO affect on the OTHER individuals/persons (eg. Servants' Boarders; Visitors, - ie. NON-RELATIVES) associated with the actual Record as a whole.

    .

IF, there are NO other Family members associated with the "Source" (ie. Record) as a whole; as, the "Source" is attached to ALL Family members; THEN, I always "Dismiss" that "Unattached Sources" indicator, in the "Sources" 'Tab' for ALL individuals/persons, in that Family; so that, no new/inexperienced User/Patron comes along later and creates/adds an "Unrelated" ("Unconnected") individual/person to the particular (principle) Family from the "Source".

    .

Believe me, it does happen ... and, what a mess, it becomes; especially, if there are many individuals/persons associated with the Record as a whole.

    .

DO NOT be concerned with "Dismissing" that "Unattached Sources" indicator, in the "Sources" 'Tab' for an individual/person.

    .

A User/Patron can come back later; and, look at the "Source"; and, then select, "Review Attachments", which will display any individuals/persons to which the "Source" is NOT already attached, allowing them to so attach to them, if so desired.

    .

I do not know about you ...

    .

    But ...

    .

Personally, I do not have the 'Time", to spend, to, either,

    .

    (1) look for (and, attach to) the existing "Unrelated" ("Unconnected") individuals/persons; or

    .

    (2) "Create" the NEW "Unrelated" ("Unconnected") individual/person, associated with a "Source"; or,

    .

    in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'

    .

As, I DO NOT have enough 'Time', to do my OWN immediate "Ancestry" (ie."Ancestral" lines), let alone "Unrelated" ("Unconnected") individuals/persons.

    .

    And ...

    as an aside ...

    .

Regarding any "Sources" in YOUR "Source Box", that are NOT attached to "Unrelated" ("Unconnected") individuals/persons not associated with your Ancestors, do not worry, do not do anything.

    .

    I hope this helps.

    .

    Thanks, Brett

Yes, it is the source tab. I am trying to clean up the sources. Too many people do not even attempt to attach the records to all the related family little lone the non deceased members. So I have to look at all the records that say unattached. Would just everyone time to dismiss what I can.

    @JanetCarlson1 JanetCarlson1

    .

    Janet

    .

    I totally understand.

    .

When I am attaching "Sources", with "Unrelated" ("Unconnected") individuals/persons, straight after attaching, I go to EACH Family member and "Dismiss" those "Unattached Sources" indicators.

    .

Many new/inexperienced Users/Patrons, DO NOT attach all the relevant Family members, let alone the "Unrelated" ("Unconnected") individuals/persons; and, they often leave the "Unattached Sources" indicator; BECAUSE, they are CONCERNED that doing so would impact on OTHERS associated with that "Source" (ie. Record), when, in fact, such is NOT the case.

    .

The original 'FamilySearch' "Blog" Article is NOT clear on what happens when you dismiss such; and, I cannot easily find a "Knowledge Article" in 'FamilySearch' regarding such.

    .

    You are not alone ...

    .

The same concern, as yours, has been raised in the OLD 'FamilySearch' ("GetSatisfaction") 'Feedback' Forum on a number of occasions.

    .

I am glad I could be of help, be of assistance.

    .

    Brett
