@MichelleM456 MichelleM456,
You might try to reach out to @Poland Genealogy Research
Also you might try to reach out to the FamilySearch family history library https://www.familysearch.org/help/fhcenters/locations/saltlakecity-library
They are doing virtual consultations for 20 minutes. I'm sure they will be able to at least point you in the right direction.

@MichelleM456 MichelleM456 assuming the person you are interested in was Catholic, people living in Mroczków belonged to the Catholic parish in Odrowąż. Records for that parish for 1902 are available through the catalog at FamilySearch.org, specifically the following collections: https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&placeId=66470&query=%2Bplace%3A%22Poland%2C%20Kielce%2C%20Odrow%C4%85%C5%BC%20(Ko%C5%84skie)%22&subjectsOpen=368171-50, but you may need to be signed in or at a family history center to view them online. If you cannot see them online at FamilySearch, please use www.metryki.gebaza.pl (another free website).
For www.metryki.genbaza.pl, you will need to create an account, but once you do, follow the trail GenBaza/AP_Kielce/Kielce/Odrowąż and pick from the years in the list. you will need to browse the images provided. For instructions on how to navigate the website and create an account, please see the "How to" guide for Metryki.GenBaza.pl -- https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/img_auth.php/9/9c/1-Metryki.GenBaza.pl_-_Instruction.pdf. According to Polish Gazetteer dated 1934, there were two Parishes for Mroczkow in Kielce province, i.e. Odrowaz and Opoczno. You may access in Family History Library, records for 1912 Opoczno after you sign in. The other Parish Odrowaz, the records for 1912 year are in metryki.genbaza.pl a subscription site. Since you need just to check for one person, I can check for you in 10 minutes and let you know if it is worth for you to sign in subscribing. But first check Opoczno in Family History Library, as you may find there your person.

Hi Maria
Thank you very much for taking the time to locate the two Mroczkow parishes in Kielce province - that was very kind. Your offer to check the subscription site is also very much appreciated. I’ll check the Family History Library first, as suggested, but may take you up on your generous offer. I will get back to you shortly. Kind regards, Michelle456

Glad to help you, as subscribing to metryki.genbaza.pl can be complicated. Just to find out if the record is there. But first please check FHL.

Hi Maria, I have checked the FHL but without success. If you could possibly check both parishes quickly to see whether Anna Sapien’s birth record exists, I would be extremely grateful. Her DOB was 26/06/1902 in Mroczkow. Many thanks, Maria! Kind regards, Michelle456

There is no Anna Sapien's birth record in Odrowaz (for Mroczkow) in years 1902, 1903, 1901, 1900, 1899. I will try to search in other parishes near Mroczkow and let you know. There was Anna Sapien who came from Mexico, born 1900 in Ellis Island. Maybe we should search this earlier date.

So sorry, but I cannot find any Sapien people in Odrowaz, Opoczno, or Blizyn. I wonder if the name of place was slightly different than Mroczkow.

Hi Maria
i am so sorry, I was typing late at night and mistyped — Anna’s surname is Stępień. If you could check again, I would so appreciate it; if not, I fully understand. Thank you very much. Kind regards, Michelle456

Michelle, on the website Geneteka there are indexes for Odrowąż parish. (Click here to see a "How to" Guide to help you navigate the website.) There are quite a few people with the surname Stępień in that parish. There is a Marianna born in 1904 to parents Teofil Stępień and Tekla Karlikowska. Do you know anything else about Anna's family in Poland? https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=gt&lang=pol&bdm=B&w=13sk&rid=2916&search_lastname=Stępień&search_name=&search_lastname2=&search_name2=&from_date=1890&to_date=1910

I have rechecked Odrowaz and Opoczno records, there are many Stępień births (about 6-8 for each year, especially in Opoczno), in years 1902, 1903, 1901, 1900 (Odrowaz only, no Opoczno records for year 1900), but none of those Stępień children born is from Mroczkow. They all are from different villages around Odrowaz and Opoczno. Do you know the names of parents? Did Anna married someone in USA and what was his name, as maybe we could identify her better in this way, especially checking MyHeritage, if you have access to it.

Hi Maria
Many thanks for the results you have found. In answer to your question, Anna’s parents’ names were: Andrzej Stępień & Maria Broza (not 100% sure about the mother’s name).
Anna’s husband was Andrzej Połeć, DOB 12/11/1899 in Święty Józef, Kołomyja.
Andrzej Połeć died in the Soviet Gulag circa 1941 and Anna died in England in 1989. The family were deported to the Gulag upon the Soviet invasion of eastern Poland in 1939/40.
Any info you find or any suggestions are much appreciated! Kind regards, Michelle

Hi Camille
Thank you very much for the research results and the link. To answer your question, Anna’s parents were Andrzej Stępień & Maria Broza (the mother’s name is not 100% for sure). I have wondered whether Anna was short for Marianna but she was always known as Anna. It certainly is a puzzle! Thanks so much for all of your help and suggestions — very much appreciated. Kind regards, Michelle

Michelle,
I have just reviewed the index of Kolomyja, Stanislavov Ukraine area, but there was no Andrzej Polec in the list. He could have been born in one of the neighboring villages. There were no other persons with this surname. But there are many of Polec people in swietokrzyskie or Kielce area, unfortunately, there is no indexed birth record of Andrzej Polec in Geneszukacz.genealodzy.pl indexing. There is no indexed birth record in Geneszukacz of Anna Stepien, daughter of Andrzej and Maria (or Marianna) Broza (I think it probably was Brzoza, as there are many people with this surname). You may use herby.com.pl/indexslo.html to look up occurrence and places where those surnames occur. You may use wild cards * and ? to replace Polish letters, and you do not need to complete the surname. When I looked through Opoczno records I found several Stepien birth records, but none with Anna Stepien or in Mroczkow. I will look again if there are parents Andrzej and Maria Stepien in Opoczno as Odrowaz is indexed and there is no such birth record. Any chance that it was a different name of place than Mroczkow?

Hi Maria
First of all, I can’t tell you how much I value what you are doing. I am double-checking to ascertain whether Anna might have been born/lived near Mroczkow. Thank you in advance for checking in the Opoczno parish to see whether Anna’s parents show up (perhaps they were married there?). I’ll get back to you soonest with any new information I uncover. In the meantime, enjoy your day😊. Kind regards, Michelle

Hi Michelle,
Sorry, but I have not found any Anna Stepien's birth record in Opoczno.
I found her death record in England, which you probably have, and I asked a British researcher to check for possible children of Anna and Andrzej Polec, as there seem to be several people with that surname in the same town. Maybe if we could find the birth places of their children in Poland, that would give us an idea where they were from.

Hi Maria
Many thanks for checking the records for Opoczno. Please save the UK researcher the trouble - I know about Anna’s family and their names, etc. I’ll let you know if/what I find🤞

Hi Maria
It has been a little time since I last wrote. I finally found an Anna Stepien — was directed to a different town by an archivist at the Opoczno Registry Office. Her name appears on an Index. I did some further searching and found, I think, the matching record but am unable to read it. I asked a Polish native speaker to take a look but they couldn’t read it either. It is from 1903. Would you have any idea if it would be a dialect/older version of Polish? It is not in Russian although the heading letters look Cyrillic. Kind regards, Michelle

Hi Michelle, I just wanted to mention that the record you mention was not uploaded, so Maria won't be able to see it until then.

Hi Maria
Hope you’ve had an enjoyable weekend!
Could you possibly let me know whereabouts you found the four siblings of Anna Stepien indexed?
Many, many thanks! Best, Michelle

Hi Maria
i hope this note finds you well. Many thanks once again for your kind help with Anna Stepien. As it turned out, she wasn’t the Anna Stepien I was looking for but I have finally found the right one. Could I approach you to translate the new record and could you please let me know your fee? It is also in Russian. Kind regards, Michelle
