How do you get a record index corrected? My 2nd-great-grandfather's name was WALLEN Rogers, not William Rogers. On his 1900 Census it is (mis)spelled "Wallan" but the INDEX has him listed as William. That is why I couldn't find that Census for YEARS.

"United States Census, 1900," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6QVQ-FN6?cc=1325221&wc=9B71-YW1:1030552401,1032323901,1034109101 : 5 August 2014), Missouri > Jasper > ED 31 Galena Township (west of city & south of Turkey Creek excl. Joplin city) > image 17 of 75; citing NARA microfilm publication T623 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).

If you attach the source to him in Family Tree, it may give you the option to edit his name. You can tell if it can be edited it the word "Edit" shows up in blue next to his name. If so, click on it and you can correct his name. Let us know if that works.

The 1910 census index is weird: there are "edit" links for the date and place, but not for any of the names.

Note that the "edit" function for indexes is completely independent of whether the source is attached anywhere in Family Tree. It depends on the collection/index: some are editable, some are not.

The index correction function on FamilySearch is barely more than a year old, and it may not be fully "deployed" yet. So keep checking back; maybe the 1910 census will become properly correctable in the future. In the meantime, I offer the thought I consoled myself with for the past decade or so, when FS's indexes were not correctable at all: you found it anyway.

    .

    As an aside ...

    .

That is a DEFINTE "Indexing" ERROR that was never picked-up (and, thus, never corrected) ...

    .

    They happen ...

    .

As the "Name" in the "Index" CANNOT be "Edited" through the "Source"; as, there is NO provision to edit the 'Name', to correct it ...

    .

    You could try:

    .

    (1) Submitting a 'FamilySearch' "Support' Case, under the 'Category' of "Indexing", to get that "Name" CORRECT (by the Programmers/Engineers).

    .

    Contact Us

    Down to: Send a Message

    https://www.familysearch.org/help/

    .

    and,

    .

    (2) You could ALSO suggesting an "Idea" ( ie. the "Add Idea" button) in the (NEW) "IDEAS" Forum, connected to this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum, again, under the 'Category' of "Indexing", to get that "Name" CORRECT (by the Programmers/Engineers)

    .

    https://community.familysearch.org/s/idea/Idea/Default

    .

    GetSatisfaction _ Temporary _ Replacement _ IDEAS _ 0.

    Personally, I would try BOTH.

    .

    Just my thoughts.

If what was indexed is what was on the record image - you may not be able to. We are told to index exactly as it is on the record. I understand the frustration I have several of them myself with my grandparents and parents.
