Among the different surname spellings for a give family, which surname should I enter for my particular family tree?

Hello Anthony,

Here are some suggestions for adding additional names for a person in Family Tree.

You can add multiple versions of a person's name in Family Tree. Generally, our recommendation is that you enter the person's birth name or complete legal name in the Vitals section. Then add all of the variations in the Other Information field. Here's how to add married names, nicknames, aliases (AKA names), and other variations.

 

When you add alternate names, the record is easier to find in Family Tree, since the system includes alternate names in the search.

 

You can delete names entered in AKA names. You can also add.

 

If you are using your computer to make changes to your Family Tree the following is the method.

1. In the Family Tree on FamilySearch.org, display the person page you want to enhance.
2. If the Details section does not show, click Details.
3. On the Details view, if the Other Information box is closed, click the triangle next to the box's name.  
4. In the Other Information section, click Add Information.
5. Click Alternate name.
6. Click to select the type of alternate name and language.
7. Enter the name.
8. Enter a reason statement to explain how you know the information is correct.
9. Click Save.

 

If you are using a mobile phone here are the steps.

Steps (mobile)

1. In the Family Tree mobile app, display the person page that you want to enhance.
2. If the Details section does not show, tap Details.
3. Scroll down to the Other Information section.
4. Tap the plus sign in a green circle.
5. Tap Alternate name.
6. Tap to select the language and type of alternate name.
7. Enter the name.
8. Tap Continue.
9. Enter a reason statement to explain how you know the information is correct.
10. Tap Save.
