How to find information on a business in the late 1800s to early 1900s. It is no longer in business.

My gr grandpa had a creamery business in New Berlin, Illinois. He sold it in the early 1900s. I cannot find any records of in but in a dairy paper with the name only. Where can I go to find information on it? I have no idea where to start. Name was West Sangamon Creamery. There is a clip from an old newspaper showing he was selling it.

Any idea where I could look?

The local library and historical society may have some information for you. Here's the link to the library in New Berlin to get you started:

    Hope you find some gems!

Yes. Thoughts how I actually found the name in a newspaper coipping he was selling it and that it was in the annual dart digest. I haven’t found anything else and everyone that would have known is gone.

The name was actually the West Sangamon County Creamery out of New Berlin.

as soon as I locate the clips again I’ll post them. Maybe that would help.

    Thanks

I was hoping to be able to locate the business license but I have no idea where to look. I don’t even know if the state or county has any of that back from the 1800s.

    I’m sure you’re right. It’s long gone

I’m hoping it will tell more about him. Age, address etc. just a little more info than I have right now.

Ok - I just have to think there are other record types that would be much easier to find

    than a business licence.

but of course depends what you are looking for and what you already have.

I cant imagine a business license would have much of any vital info of a genealogical nature - though surely of family interest,

You might try to contact the New Berlin Historical Society and the Sangamon County Historical Society to see if they have any information. Here's a link to the County HS: https://sangamoncountyhistory.org/wp/

@ChrisGleason2 ChrisGleason2 Ive always had pretty good luck searching the records at the Secretary of State for business info... also property records may give you an idea as well.

you may already have this but i found Henry Horn as a private in the Civil War; Battery F: This battery, "Cheney's," was discontinued and

the veterans and recruits were assigned Feb. 22, 1865, to other

    batteries.

this was from the History of Sangamon on Internet Archive
