anyone know where to find Nicaragua records

It is my understanding that around the late 1700's and early 1800's Nicaragua became independent from a conglomeration of other Central American countries that was known as Guatemala. Between that and immigrants moving from other Central American and South American Countries to assist with wars, my husband's family records seem to fade out around 1820. Does anyone know if government records for Nicaragua are still found as Nicaraguan records or are they possibly found as Guatemalan records? Or, are the Nicaraguan records that are pre-1820 still waiting to be indexed? Any help would be appreciated!

Nicaragua apparently became an independent state in 1838, after having previously been part of the Spanish Empire and then subsequently the First Mexican Empire and then a confederation of Central American states. However these political changes likely didn't influence the way parishes created and stored religious registers. Assuming the region of interest remains part of Nicaragua typical historical documents of genealogical interest will have either remained in said "parish," have been destroyed by wars or other significant events, or perhaps less likely have been transferred to the capital, Managua, or a regional or departmental sub-capital.
