I am searching for information about a man who worked as butler for an archdeacon in Shropshire but whose brother is styled as a gentleman see below. Was it normal for brothers to occupy such different stations in life in the late 1700's?

Im sure there are various different aspects in answering your question.
BUT one large factor is the law of primogeniture
which meant that the oldest son (alone) inherited the title and most of the estate of the Father.
