Missing death info

My ggg grandfather, George Washington Bartholomew died in Franklin County, North Carolina before June 21st, 1905...I know because he was alive in the 1900 census, but his widow requested his pension on 6/21/1905. Of course, no death certificate, no will, no court minutes, no obituary, no cemetery or tombstone. Any other ideas where I could look for death information?

I've done a cursory 'search' for the last name and nothing. I'm preparing myself mentally to read every single obituary in the area from 1900-1905. :) Thank you!!!!
