Please Change information in Family Search Transcription

I found an entry in the Search page for Hannah Spencer christened 14 Nov 1784 Uttoxeter which adds her burial as 16 Jan 1798. When I checked the original parish record film #008055805 image 116 for the burial entry it says Ann daughter of Richard Spencer buried 16 Jan 1798. There is no age given. In checking the rest of the family I discovered there was another daughter called Ann christened 2 Apr 1780, so I think it is more likely to be the burial of Ann and not Hannah. Can the burial information that has been added to the Transcription be changed? Someone else has put the family together in Family Tree and my research agrees with this except for the burial of Hannah. I believe Hannah married William Mycock in 1805 and they made their home in Mayfield, Staffordshire. I found burials for both of Hannah's parents Richard Spencer and Hannah Parker Spencer in Mayfield that give ages that agree with the known facts on the family.

Many thanks for any help you can give,

Wendy

Hi @WendyWalmsley the record you're referring to that quotes both baptism and burial (I suspect it is actually a burial record that has been erroneously indexed under baptisms), allegedly for Hannah, is from "England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975" which is a legacy collection and an index only. This means that a) as a legacy collection, no corrections will be made to the data and b) collections that are index only, even when active, are not edible in any case, as the potential errors cannot be directly verified.

That said, it is also a collection with known errors, some of which are due to the fact that some entires originated from the IGI. I suspect you have stumbled onto one such error.

The "England, Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991" collection (same red flags as the above Births and Christenings collection) has indexed what appears to be the same death record as being for Ann Spencer, not Hannah, including day and month (16 of January 1798). This marries with your finding in the record film you quoted. As does the "England, Staffordshire, Church Records, 1538-1944"; though in that case only indexed with the year. The image for the latter is viewable at FS centres, affiliate libraries and Find My Past.

Given that there are three points of reference to the death belonging to Ann and only one to Hannah, in my opinion you would be fine to go ahead and detach that record from Hannah and attach it to Ann, along with removing that death date from Hannah's profile. I would, however, leave a note outlining the situation in the collaboration tab for both siblings, to avoid confusion to other contributors in the future.

Out of an abundance of caution, I would also suggest manually looking through the images of the original Staffordshire register around that date, just to be absolutely certain there aren't entries for both Ann AND Hannah. Though I suspect you won't find one for Hannah.

@WendyWalmsley DGS #008055805 is restricted to a FSC, but if you can find one near you, you should be able to edit the index for Hannah. Open it from Images to ensure the correct viewer for editing. The burial date was obviously added as it would not be on an original 1784 christening record. You can verify that by clicking on “Show Change History”.

Just doing a little poking around, I found the Hannah Spencer married to William Mycock (and your name as a contributer). William was born less than five miles from Uttoxeter. If you are thinking the two Hannah’s are likely the same person, I would agree with you.
