Indexing Full name review: Clarifying questions about selections and format

I've been asked if the full name is selected, and it's not, there are a pair of initials that remained unselected. When I click to select the initials, sometimes it selects one initial, and other times it selects both. If it selects one at a time, both will have their own line. If it selects both simultaneously it will attempt to put them on the same line. Which formatting is correct?
I noticed that if it selects both, you are unable to shrink the box and then go select the other, clicking the letter will not bring up a box. I've seen it done where people while click a different word and bring the box up to highlight the separate initial, but when I look on the right it propagates the original word, which makes it appear there's some persistence to the originally selected word. It doesn't seem ideal to train the AI that handles indexing on data with these discrepancies.
So back to my original question, what is the correct format, and how can it be made more clear to users. Does the selected word have persistent data, or is it exclusively the location selected?
Sorry if that was long winded, I appreciate everything done here. This is definitely stepping in the right direction.

I have since located the new highlight feature, so I have that answer, but what is the correct input? It appears to be separately, but I'd like to be sure.

@hyrumbrantoncampbell1 for your example: Highlight each initial separately and drag one into the given name box You'll have to type the 2nd initial into the same box then make sure you have a Surname Box added so your result in step 2 will be Given Name: E. F. Surname: Smith all in Given Name Boxes. In Step 2-3 Drag the Surname into the Surname box if its not already in place. Then in step 4 make any spelling changes then you can hit Done.
