Where are my messages?

I haven't been using FamilySearch in a while, and now that I've come back to it and want to look at some exchanges I had with other users I can't find them. I click the Chat icon in the top left corner, but I can't find any Chat history. I sent a message to someone yesterday, but the only way I could see it was by attempting to send her another Chat message — at which point the message I sent her yesterday popped on the screen. How can I see the history of messages, and the messages I've sent that I haven't received responses to?

You said you "haven't been using FamilySearch for a while." The status of your old messages depends on what you mean by "a while."

In the Chat Guide, it says:

Question: Can I download the data from the previous messaging tool?

Answer: Before July 31, 2024, users had an option to download messages prior to November 2021 from FamilySearch.org/messages/download to a .docx or .zip file on a personal device. As of August 1, 2024, messages from the previous tool are no longer available for download. Messages after 2021 were automatically imported to FamilySearch Chat.

So if these messages you seek are older than November 2021, then you are not going to be able to retrieve them. If they are newer than that, then they should be in your Chat history.
