Here are some possibilities (from near the end of the FamilySearch Chat Guide)

Question: Why is my FamilySearch Chat not working?

Answer: The chat feature may not be available for the following reasons:

    • The user is under the age of 18.
    • The user doesn't have a valid birthdate.
    • The user's account is not chat enabled.
    • The user's country is not chat enabled.
    • The user has not completed registration.
    • The user has been marked deceased.

For some reason my account is no longer "Chat enabled." Other users trying to contact me by clicking on my username in someone's profile (saying I made a change to that profile) get the message "unable to message this user." I used to get messages. My profile is complete, has a valid birthday (way past 18 years of age), I am in the US, I am not marked as deceased. I've had my account for many, many years so it must be "complete." Exactly how do I (re)enable chat on my account?

I don't think that users can explicitly enable or disable Chat. You may need to contact FamilySearch Support.

Can you chat with yourself? I can do that.

if you go to the chat box you will notice that there are 3 dots next to the x close mark. One of the prompts says view my profile. If you click on that there is place for your email and you have the choice to either make it public or lock it and make it private. So it is possible that you or the other person has made the email private and is not getting messages to access chat. I do not know if that effects chats in general or not. The person you are trying to contact I believe would still see a notification if that someone has sent a message if they are on the main familysearch page and notice the notification signal but they wouldn't be notified my email that someone has started a chat.

If I am wrong please let me know

@jamiehadlock You are right that a person can choose to make their email address public or private. But that has no effect at all on the Chat system. You can always chat with any user, as long as that user is at least 18, and had not had their Chat privileges turned off by an administrator. Note that a user cannot choose not to have Chat access (but of course they can choose to ignore any Chat messages sent to them).

@nmoff You said your 'profile' is complete with a valid birthdate way beyond 18 years old. Your FamilySearch Account needs to have a birthdate in it, not just your FamilySearch Tree profile. You can check that by clicking on your account image in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, choose settings from the drop-down and then Account. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see what birthdate is linked to your FamilySearch Account. This birthdate is the one that needs to show as over 18 years old. Can you confirm this birthdate is correct?
