When trying to merge, you are not able to choose one set of parents over the other, or if you are, it is not obivious. Also I miss that you can switch which file survives and which does not.

You can still switch profiles, just click the button labeled "Switch":

The button will not be present if there are underlying data requirements that require the merge occur in a set direction.

As a user that has done a lot of merging and a lot of correcting of merging done badly by others, I agree with the engineers decision to not allow chopping off parents in the middle of a merge. If the parents are the same, they need to be properly merged. If the parents are different, the merge needs to stopped and the situation re-evaluated. Just getting rid of one set during a merge too easily leads to lost information and isolated profiles adrift in the database.
