Help Accessing Restricted Image – Colombian Passport Application (Film 102037011, Image 124)

Hello,

I am trying to locate one specific record to help my family reclaim Colombian citizenship. FamilySearch shows an indexed entry for my great-grandfather, Charles Franklin, dated 27 August 1983, Bogotá, Colombia, in the collection Colombia, Migration Records, 1885–2014.

The record reference is:

  • Digital Folder Number (DGS): 102037011
  • Image Number: 124
  • Record link: Charles Franklin, Passport Application, 1983
  • Catalog link: FamilySearch Catalog – Solicitudes de visas, Caja_1136_carpeta_5842, 1983
  • Location: Granite Mountain Record Vault
  • Collection/Shelf: International Digital

When I try to view the image, I see the lock screen that says the record is not available for online viewing.

We are also searching directly at the Archivo General de la Nación (Bogotá), but the archivists there have explained that they do not have a name index for reseñas de pasaportes and asked us to provide the FamilySearch image to help them locate it in their boxes.

Would there be any way to access this one image (Film 102037011, Image 124) through FamilySearch channels for legal/citizenship purposes, or to obtain confirmation that the image exists in the vault?

Thank you kindly for any guidance,
Steven Anderson

    From what I can see, those images are only viewable in Salt Lake City, at the main FSC. You might try locating a Utah-based genealogist through Cyndi's List.

    Best of luck.

    Aine, thank you! Is this something my cousin (who lives there) could go and fetch on her own?

    Yes, she should be able to, and there are wonderfully helpful staff at the library, should she not be familiar with the process.

    @SteveAnderson76

    I am not connected with FamilySearch

    When I looked at the "Main Catalog" for the DGS number no icon at all displays for me. I think that means that the record is not available.

    I looked In the FamilySearch Library catalog https://libcat.familysearch.org/ and there was no result for that DGS number. Both these suggest to me that the record is not available. You could ask the Library directly what the situation is.

    Microfilm/DGS searches are better conducted from the Main Catalog, rather than from the LibCat. See this help article: https://www.familysearch.org/en/library/our-catalogs for details.

    Checking the Main Catalog shows DGS 102037011 as part of the Colombia registros migratorios collection. It is a digital-only collection, not a microfilm.

    @SteveAnderson76

    The following FamilySearch help article, Article Id: 1471January 23, 2025

    https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/article/why-is-no-camera-icon-showing-for-a-digitized-microfilm-in-the-catalog

    includes the wording

    "Digitally captured records

    Some records were never preserved on microfilm but were captured digitally. These records only display a DGS number in the catalog, without an icon in the Format column.
    Note: Digitally captured records are currently inaccessible due to restrictions, and no physical copy is available."

    My view is that the records are not available, but you may wish to confirm this directly with the FamilySearch Library.

    @SteveAnderson76 In case this has you thoroughly confused, when FamilySearch has a physical copy on microfilm it can be viewed at the SL Library. When a digitally captured record is restricted it cannot be viewed anywhere, including at the SL Library. In other words, until the dates fall outside of current privacy laws, the film will be unavailable.
