I am trying to locate a John Vaughan birth in July 1762 and death 7-14-1842 on the "Dawes Roll" Final Rolls of Citizens and Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes. His wife was Nancy Callicott. We have a listing for a John Vaughan with a Cherokee number of 4471 but are unsure if this is the correct John Vaughan. Can someone help us locate this please or tell me how to go about finding it.

The only John Vaughn I could find was Mississippi Choctaw and was never enrolled. The number you provided and identified as Cherokee was Walter [Walker] Phillips born about 1852. fwiw the Dawes Commission really didn't do too much until about 1896. Something doesn't seem 'right' so a little more info would help

I did some digging, and it looks like the John Vaughan you’re asking about (b. 1762, d. 1842) wouldn’t appear on the Dawes Final Rolls, since those only list folks alive between 1898–1907
. The “John Vaughan – Cherokee #4471” you found is from the 1896 citizenship applications, which were later voided. That file is worth checking—it often contains affidavits and family details that can confirm if he connects to your John and Nancy Callicott.

Next step: pull his 1896 case #4471 through the Oklahoma Historical Society or FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/1405798). Ancestry also has it under “1896 Dawes Commission Index (Overturned).” You might also try YourRoots for Cherokee-related searches: https://yourroots.com/search-record/state-province-county.

That should tell you whether it’s your John’s descendants applying.
