my spouse died a year ago and I need to add that to our family tree, but don't know how. Can you tell me how to do that?

If you have previously created a profile for your spouse, you can use this Help Center article to do this: How do I change a status from living to deceased in Family Tree?.
Otherwise, you can create a new profile and attach it to your private profile as spouse and to their parents as child. This Help Center article explains how: How do I add a spouse or partner in Family Tree?.
In either case, your spouse's profile will become visible to all users.
