How do you handle a wrong person being in the big tree?

I recently found documents on FamilySearch via the "Full Text" search lab that tell me exactly who the father is of one of my ancestors. He is not the person that FamilySearch has in its tree and all the other trees around the worldwide web that have been produced using the wrong person. I'd like to be able to add the sources (there are at least 10 on FamilySearch) for my ancestor's father here on FamilySearch, but I won't add them to the wrong person. It's my word against everyone else's, even though a couple of the documents names the children and the places they lived. The problem is that we have 2 people with the same name who married women who have the same first name, so it's easy to get it confused.

I just want to be able to see the right person in my tree, so I can add sources. How can I do that?

I have been in that position for several of my family members. It required me to find both sets of families and their census records and to do all necessary unmerging to separate the two families. In order to keep the families and their records separate, finding the spouses maiden names were required. Please use the supporting documents you have and compare them with all census records for both families along with any Obituaries and cemetery records you can find.

The FamilySearch tree belongs to all of us. It is fully open-edit and collaborative, except for a few read-only profiles for famous people and early LDS Church pioneers. You can edit the connections, or you can ask the Community for help with editing.

This Help Article gives you the basics, and other help articles cover almost any possible condition.
If you would like specific help, please share some details, and we will be happy to try.

Best of luck and happy searching!
