You should first use the Search / Family Tree search to look for an existing profile for the person. If you can't find such a profile with a good degree of certainty, you can add a new profile.

• If the new person is living or you don't have evidence that they are deceased, you must mark them as living. Your question suggests to me that you may be using a Family Group Tree. If that is the case, you need to ensure that you have selected the correct tree before you add them. If you are not using a Family Group Tree, the new profile will be visible only to you.
• If the new person is verifiably deceased, you can mark them as deceased. In this case, the new profile will be added to the public tree, and it is irrelevant whether you are using a Family Group Tree.

To add a new profile:

• If you know that the person that you want to add is the parent, child or spouse of another person who is already in the tree, you open the profile of the related person and use the appropriate ADD PARENT, ADD CHILD or ADD SPOUSE button to add the new profile.
• If you don't know of any such existing relatives, you can add an unconnected person. There are instructions on doing this in the following Help Center article: How do I add an unconnected person to Family Tree? You open your "Recents" list, either by clicking SHOW ALL in the "Recently Viewed" section of your home page or by using the "Family Tree / Recents" menu item. There is an ADD UNCONNECTED PERSON button near the bottom of the list.
