Looking for Samuel Galpin's Will, died in 1771. On MF 007627346 I found it, but it was very cryptic. Appears to say will would be found at "41 and 42"; "something" at 6 & 7; Orders for distribution 10; Distrit 88; Admin and order distrib 29. How do I understand this entry. I'm guessing this is something of an index, so where do I find the actual will and probate. Found in Middletown, Connecticut probate records

Sorry @Joan Carman there are a lot of references to Samuel Galpin on that film - can you tell us the image number (eg 111 of 574) or some other way of identifying the exact image?

I'm not familiar with US probate as I've only seen a couple, but that film does look like the full story. But quite what document you're looking at, it's not possible to know without seeing the image - inventory, grant of probate, record of court proceedings, etc etc? (US probate proceedings do seem more complex than those in the UK :-( )

OK - I can see some of it…

I ASSUME that the bit you found is on Image 12 of 574, film 7627346. And yes, the initial pages are an index, as you suggest.

"Will & Ex[?] 41 & 42" suggests the will is on pages 41 & 42. Normally, in the absence of any reference to the contrary, that will be pages 41 & 42 in this volume - your task is to find where the page numbers are on the images! For the relevant section, the page numbers are at the top, in the middle - pages 41 onwards are images 50 on (you just have to step through it looking). (That's the will there)

There's something on page 51, image 55 (bottom right if I read it correctly). Is it a codicil to the will? Not sure.

    The Inventory is on pages 44, 45, 46, & 47 (you have to stick the 4 in front of the later numbers…) - that's images 52 & 53.

Orders for Distribution??? are on page 10 - but I can't see anything on that page (image 34) that's relevant

Distribution is on p.88 (image 74 and 75???)

Something is on p.29 (image 44, but again I can't see anything on that page)

So I don't know what's on page 10 and page 29, I'm afraid - of course, I could be misreading the page numbers but at least the will is in the above list 😊
