Both FamilySearch and FindMyPast have the 1850 US Census, and the images are generally better there.
Often, on Ancestry, the image is more legible if you use the option to view without highlighting or in Basic Viewer.

I'm looking at it on FMP, and the image is definitely better there, but I'm still not 100% sure of the word. Checking some adjacent pages to see if there are notes on other people.

The last line on the page has another member of the family, Alexander, same age as Joseph. While, I'm not quite sure what the enumerator wrote next to Joseph, I think the reference is to Alexander who was missed being listed with his family.

@Áine Ní Donnghaile Thanks as I think your comment about the last line explains it….. I think the enumerator entered 'mistake' and then made his corrected entry at the bottom of the sheet

I don't think it was an error in the name so much as it was an omission from the rest of the family. I think there was a James Alexander and also a son Joseph. So… yes…. I agree with the annotation being 'mistake' Thanks to both

@Mark McKenzie_1 Did you notice the reference to twins in the far right column of Joseph's line? Given the same ages for Joseph and Alexander, they are the twins.
