Browser process loop while editing event Place text

When I am editing information, I sometimes decide to bail out of a form without saving any changes. Often, in FamilySearch and other sites and non-web applications, it is possible to do this by using the Esc key.
Suppose I am editing information on an existing profile event and I have typed something to change the content of the Place text, and I then decide to bail out while the cursor is still in the Place text. If I use the Esc key, the browser process goes into a loop. In the following example, I have just typed "xx" in front of the existing text and then Esc:
After about 10 seconds of intensive CPU usage, the following dialog is displayed (in Chrome):
Clicking the "Exit page" results in an "Aw, Snap!" browser screen (in Chrome) and the page has to be reloaded. The behaviour is similar for the Edge browser. This is for a Windows 10 desktop computer, with up-to-date browsers and OS.
The behaviour of the Esc key is also inconsistent when the cursor is in other fields on the event editing form. In some cases the form will close, in other cases all the existing data is cleared out of the field and the form stays open.
