I'd say there were two possible, completely distinct, routes:

    1. If you are comfortable to put it in the public domain and no currently living people are mentioned, upload it to the Digital Archive (archive.org) and attach it to the FT profile as an external source instead of as a memory.
    2. Split it into date ranges (or whatever) and upload it in chunks.

In both cases I am assuming you will also keep a copy in your own local archive.

Definitely don't compromise the resolution of the images in the interest of saving space.

simply split it into TWO files (or even "chapters")
use this utility for the split:
    https://www.ilovepdf.com/split_pdf
(and compression does not have to always compromise good resolution)

note that same site also does compression by the way.
using the default compression on that site - I have never noticed any significant loss in resolution.

what resolution did you scan the journal at?
scanning at more than 400 dpi is usually unnecessary?
(most printed items have no more than 300 dpi in the first place)
