Memory tagged to a person, but without an associated FT profile

How can this happen?

See this memory: https://www.familysearch.org/en/memories/memory/104185845

The offending tag:

If you click on the cog, you get this:

with the bottom part just flashing - nothing ever loads.

Is this something that can happen through normal workflows, or is there a data problem?

I have done an experiment with one of these (https://www.familysearch.org/en/memories/memory/122016509, first tag listed). I actioned its 'Attach to Tree' message. I then hit the cog and took the option to Detach Tag.

The name remained on the list, now with 'Attach to Tree' back again, but with the cog now showing what I assume to be the original tagger and the correct tag name, rather than (as when I first visited this memory) the 'Unknown Contributor' behaviour mentioned above. There are 3 other 'Attach to Tree' instances on this memory and their cogs are now showing the original tagger/correct tag name also.

But why did the name remain on the list at all after I hit Detach Tag? How can a memory persona exist if it doesn't have its target properly defined? And why are the 'Attach to Tree' instances I have found on other memories exhibiting the 'Unknown Contributor' behaviour?

Creating a tag and attaching that tag to the tree are two separate steps if you upload to your gallery and then tag your photos. When you attach from the tree person page it becomes one step.

So for example, if I have a missionary photo from my grandpa and he labeled some of the elders on it like "Elder Crookston" or "Elder Palmer" and I don't know who those people are in the tree, I can create a tag for "Elder Crookston" or "Elder Palmer" that is not attached to the tree and come back and attach it later (or if you happen to stumble across it and you know who the elders are, you can attach it to the right profile).

It's also useful if you are uploading photos from an in-law or great-aunt where you have great family memories and many of the people are tagged, but you don't know who they are in the tree. You can tag the photo as "Sophia, Stephanie's daughter" or "Warren's cousin Grant" and move on with your photos. You may come across them again. When you are ready, you can find them (or add them) to the tree and attach the memories.

Now, when a tag is not yet attached to the tree, it should show the original contributor's name. When it is attached to the tree, it should show the contributor who attached the tag.

Thank you for pointing this out. I work on the engineering team for Memories and will create a defect for this to get addressed. The first scenario also sounds funny. It shouldn't flash and never load. I will look at that and the "Unknown contributor" scenario.

Another point: Tags on photos are like personas on historical records, in that the record (index) persona is always there. You can attach or detach the persona, but the persona remains. So when you detach a memories tag, the original tag remains as the contributor entered it, but it is no longer attached to that tree person and will not show up on that tree person's memory page.

I'm seeing it just in the example given, but haven't been able to recreate with another tag. Do you have another example?

Many thanks @Beth Ann W, I understand how it works now.

If I visit https://www.familysearch.org/en/memories/memory/104185845and click on the cog by John Clarke (third from bottom) I still get the 'Unknown Contributor' behaviour. (I get the same behaviour if I navigate to that memory via https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/memories/L56S-92B.)
