How to Become a Genealogist

Are you wondering how to become a genealogist? It’s a worthwhile question with a variety of answers. In fact, asking how to become a genealogist is a little like asking how to become an artist or a cook. Do you want to paint for your own enjoyment, or do you want to sell your artwork? Do you want to cook informally for family and friends, or do you want to become an expert chef?

Great article and very timely, I just graduated 16 April 2025 with a Diploma of Family History from the University of Tasmania. When I was fifteen my mother took me along to a genealogy class saying I needed to learn about our family. Since then I have been the occasional genealogist helping people along the way. Then I felt the need for formal qualification to give some credence to my advice. I was born in Scotland and knew Scottish research sources very well, but felt a need to know more about helping fellow Aussies with topics like convict ancestry and the ANZACs. The course opened my eyes to topics I had previously not considered and more importantly how to write my family history.
