how do I get started?

These are my own views and will probably not be the same as others.
I would begin by using the Search (FamilySearch top menu, Search - Dropdown first item - Records)
Use this to locate a known ancestor, maybe a grandparent, or better still a great-grand parent if you know enough about one.
If you are lucky, the record you find will be attached to an existing Person Record and you will be able to explore that person's tree and add to it using your family knowledge to locate other records and attach your ancestors.
If the Person Record does not exist, then if you're sure that this is definitely the right person, you can build up your tree in the direction of that ancestor by adding the people in between and eventually them.
If you're not sure, but you want to hang on to this as a possible, then you can create a new Person to attach using the option to Add Unconnected Person at the bottom of Recents [ https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/recents ] and then copy that new person's PID and attach it to the record that you found.
After that, it's very much the same as the above as you gain more experience.
I would warn strongly against using the Research Help Hints in your early stages. Very often they are built on very simple similarities and do not consider other factors that would exclude the suggested person. Just use your knowledge and that of your other family members, locate records, add people and gradually construct your tree.
There are many experienced people in the community who can help if you get stuck.
