FamilySearch started in 1894, then called the Genealogical Society of Utah. The name FamilySearch was adopted in 1999. Wikipedia has a summary of its history here.

The FamilySearch website was launched on May 24, 1999.  As stated above it has a long and storied history, but the current version (minus many beta trials and updates) started in 1999 when it took over from the Genealogical Society of Utah.
