A I Indexing

I miss indexing. It taught me so much and I hope I've helped many. Reviewing the name places, full names, even short names seem robotic. There isn't much intellect used in deciphering the names except to look on the full document to see a pattern. Just saying. I know AI is the in thing, and it probably helps greatly in running through many records, but at what cost? I came back to FS now that I'm free to do so again and was shocked to find indexing gone! My 2 cents…

I miss indexing as well I got very, very good at it. I tried AI indexing, and to me, it needed a lot of work before being rolled out. AI picked things that an indexer would know not to. Sometimes, human eyes are better than AI. If you're looking for indexing; well more on transcription side if indexing, check out From The Page or the National Archive's Citizen Archivist.
I'm currently doing Virginia WWII Naval discharges.

National Archives has only a few projects, but I'm currently doing JFK Assassination records. Not about the assassination itself, but it's about witness statements, financial records, depositions and the like.

I agree completely. Here's what Google says about this matter:
"AI can't read old handwriting effectively because modern training data lacks sufficient examples of historical scripts, which often include unique abbreviations, ligatures, and inconsistent forms that differ significantly from modern cursive. Also, the quality of the historical documents themselves can be a major issue, with faded ink, poor resolution, and shaky or inconsistent writing making the task of transcription inherently difficult, even for human experts."

Ostensibly, AI has done a brilliant job as far as the transcriptions of cursive documents I have come across in the Full-Text Search section. However, I wonder if the "final versions" of these transcribed documents do not owe more than a little help from checks and corrections by humans?

@ShelleWells I have this thread bookmarked. It seems to have lost its place in the Discussions sequence (and my Bookmarks list says it was last updated on 5th June!) May need a tweak.
