Is there a way to stop people from doing this?

This user in particular has done it to many records. There has to be a way to make it clear that a person's relationship is not part of their name.

Totally agree this is inappropriate. All you can do is send a polite message to the user every time you see this pointing out that the person has unlimited relationships to thousands of other users and restore the name to the previous version every time. With persistent effort on your part, the other user may eventually get the hint.

I see many people do that in personal trees on other genealogy sites. Perhaps the contributor does not realize the collaborative nature of the FamilySearch tree.

I encountered this as well. Actually, the user also added the mother's maiden name as a middle name for each of her children, but in all lowercase letters. I politely messaged the user and it stopped, although they never replied to me. It was lots of work correcting all these entries, which spanned many generations and branches.
