    Family Review, Costa Rica

    Jerry Hill
    Jerry Hill ✭✭✭

    Since we are no longer able to communicate with Family Search directly, can someone (anyone) who actually works for FS and reads these posts - - -

    Get word to the managers of the Spanish and Portuguese Name Review project that the Costa Rica portion is screwed up? Every image that comes up for that country is actually for the Dominican Republic. Every place that the computer comes up with is in Costa Rica and it takes FOREVER to get them all switched to D.R. places.

      @SerraNola looks like a data problem for you.

      In the same vein, can an FS person ask someone in charge if they have any plans or means to get feedback on the Family Review app?

      It seems like it's still at the Beta testing stage — difficult to use and slow, with a lot of basic data errors.

      Just checked, confirmed that a request for doing documents for Costa Rica in Family Review is bringing up the Dominican Republic.

      Aye Carumba! 😮

      @Jerry Hill Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I will send this issue in to be looked into.

      I just checked. The problem is still there, but I found a workaround. When you are presented with a Dominican Republic record, open "Help with this step," scroll to the bottom, and click GO TO NEXT RECORD. At this point, the system will advance you to the next record in the screen, so keep doing it until you reach the last one. Then when you click GO TO NEXT RECORD, the system will display a Costa Rica record.

      The dreaded "unknown error" problem is still unresolved, however, regardless of geographical location. See other "Family Review" threads for more details.

      Hello, all. I've worked a ton of Family Review tasks for Costa Rica and haven't seen a single instance of Dominican Republic records populating. I only do the task with the parent screen set to spanish.

      Hmmmm. EVERY batch I've ever tried for Costa Rica came up populated with DR records. One was really weird. It had place names taken from China.

      Muy mezclado

      @Jerry Hill I opened Family Review five different times today, asking for records from Costa Rica, and each time I got a record for Costa Rica. Will you please check again and let me know what you find?

      @Ashlee C.

      Ashlee.

      Yes, I got a record from Costa Rica each of the six times I tried. However, I was not able to submit any of them because each had data errors and highlights had to be added or modified. Each time, trying to save caused an "Unknown Error, Wait and try again" Error.

      @A Nelson , just keeping you in the loop.

      for @Ashlee C. & @A Nelson

      Good morning—I was working Costa Rica Family Review tasks again this morning and for about an hour the system behaved as expected, allowing me to add highlights, adjust and edit and submit the whole time (about 15 or 20 records) until just about 25 minutes ago when the system began to again throw up the dreaded error and therefore I was unable to make corrections.

      The error appearing in Spanish reads as follows: "Se agotó el tiempo de espera del registro

      Este servicio ya no está disponible. Espera unos minutos y vuelve a intentarlo."

      This only occurs if I try to add highlights. I can adjust highlights just fine and I can correct text just fine and save those changes.

      System is behaving well today. Successfully worked a bunch of Costa Rica Family Review tasks with no issues today. Except that my eyes began to cross after awhile. :-)

      @Ashlee C. @A Nelson

      Well, Congratulations to the engineers. They finally got the highlight induced error fixed. I just did 6 records of Costa Rica baptisms and was able to submit them all. Initially. I stayed away from changing highlights, but when I had to add a name and highlights — and it took it, I decided to try more. I started adjusting every highlight — even if it didn't need it — just to purposely try and offend the program. But it took them all ! Thank you.

      Now, work on the help/instructions facility. The current help functions are abysmally brief and obscure. I could figure it out because I had used the record correction features in my own genealogical research. However, a newbie would have a tough time figuring out what to do and how to do it. It would probably be so hard and frustrating that they would quit and not come back. @A Nelson your videos and other help ideas would probably be super useful here.

      @MichaelDurwardNash @Jerry Hill You're right. The engineers just confirmed they got the fix handled. I'm so happy it's working and that you are able to add those highlights finally. Thanks for confirming that it is working for you.

      @MichaelDurwardNash  @Jerry Hill @Ashlee C. Not so soon, this morning I got the dreaded error message, the Spanish version. However, I should report that it is behaving much better. I was able to correct highlights in three records, before I couldn't go further. I sent a Feedback comment with my contact information and would be glad to help with any type of testing. Thanks for all your comments to help improve this important feature.

      @Ashlee C. @A Nelson

      Well, over the last 5 days, I've been able to fix (mostly) and submit about a dozen Costa Rica baptism records. The irksome "Some error occurred" error has not occurred again.

      However, don't let the engineers rest on their laurels. About a fourth of those records had <Unknown> as their primary person. This, of course, required extra time to figure out which record on the image it pertained to. Plus the extra time to add the name and events of the previously unknown person. This fix is going to be a lot harder than the "Some error" error since it will require better training for the AI program in recognizing Spanish words and names. The AI had a LOT of trouble figuring out relationships — and these were all on printed forms !! For a fair number, the AI couldn't figure out dates or names that started on one line and finished on the next.

      Another problem will probably be easier to fix, since it involved highlights (where we know they have worked recently). In cases where a highlight needs to be changed or added there is often not an existing highlight on the target words. So we're supposed to click on the "Add new highlight" button, right? Well, most of the time, the "Click and Drag" does not work to create a new highlight. In these cases, I usually just find a random non-data word that has a highlight and drag it to the data site where I need a highlight. Sometimes I just have to leave it un-highlighted because I can't find or make one.

      Thanks for your and the engineers' help.

      The opening thread of this post represents the idea also that there's a disconnect between people doing the work and people trying to make the programs. Someone could suggest they make themselves more willing and able to talk to people doing the work here.

      But this is stated as a friendly suggestion and not negative. :)

      @russellporter1 Unlike the Labs projects, e.g. CET or Data Quality Score, this initiative doesn't seem to have a channel where Community members can engage directly and effectively with the project team - a shame in my view given that such a collaborative mechanism exists and has been proven to work well.

      @russellporter1 and @MandyShaw1 You're in the right place! The Get Involved / Indexing category is specifically for questions and feedback related to Get Involved. Moderators here are working closely with the engineers to gather feedback and report any issues. Please continue sharing your experiences and problems in this category—thank you!

      @Ashlee C. Is there somewhere users can go to view/track the known issues concerning Get Involved/Indexing? That is one of the very helpful aspects of the 'Lab Group' mechanism.

      @russellporter1 Exactamente ! That was my hope with that post. And, as Mandy @MandyShaw1 said, there is currently no easy means to provide feedback. Fortunately, Ashlee @Ashlee C. took the bull by the horns and started conversing with the engineers about the problems. She/they have already solved one perplexing problem and are working on others.

      I understand there are others who are working to make feedback and help an easier process.

      @Ashlee C. @A Nelson I have been able to finish and submit quite a number of records, mostly in Costa Rica, since they fixed the highlights problem. The <Unknown> Principal is still an aggravating issue.

      @MandyShaw1 At this time, there are no current plans to create a dedicated known issues page specifically for Get Involved/Indexing, like the one used in Feedback Groups. However, this category is absolutely the right place to share feedback and report any issues you encounter. All input here is reviewed and passed along to the appropriate teams, including the engineers working on these areas. Your insights are very helpful and appreciated.
