Likely it is the order being shown — the information can only be moved from the left to the right. No switching is allowed.

Or in other words, the person on the left of the merge that will be deleted has to stay on the left and the person on the right which will be the surviving profile has to stay on the right and has to be the surviving profile. You cannot switch the two profiles.
The explanation I hears long ago was that there are situations in which the required surviving profile has so much information that reversing the order of the merge will crash the whole routine because it exceeds required limitations of certain parts of a profile.
