I'm looking for information about which of my ancestors held elected office. Is there a way to do this? I'm looking for much more depth than what is in the "Famous Relatives" section, such as individuals who served in Congress, state legislatures, as mayors, etc.

I would suggest that local newspapers would be a good resource. Depending on the location, there are many free newspaper sites. And, the big for-pay providers have free weekends or free trials.
