How to find a birth record from the 1800s in Prince Edward Island when father is unknown?

I am trying to find a birth record for Robert McKay. His marriage registry document (married in Ontario) says he was born in P.E.I. in 1844, his mother was Mary McKay and father is blank. Canadian census also state he is Scottish born in P.E. I. Some genealogy sites have his Mother listed as Mary Stewart McKay with sources that have her parents as Angus Stewart and Mary MacDonald. I have no proof that this is correct and I have seen a document that leads me to believe that is incorrect.

@MaryRandall63 Civil registration did not begin in Prince Edward Island until 1906 so church records would be your best source but you would need to narrow it down to the town to know if any records exist.

Looking at the 1871 Census for your Robert, it seems the John McKay living next to him might be related. It's also quite possible, given the difference in their ages that John's wife Nancy is a second marriage. Perhaps researching that family will give you some clues.

I will take a look at that information on John on the census, thank you. I am not sure if John had the same father as some sites question it also. I have found documents for John McKay but some have no father listed or different parents. Too many with the same names.
