I am helping an older gentleman whose wife is Malaysian and they are having a hard time researching her line. Can anyone advise me how to help them?

Sincerely,

Michelle Morris

If she is of a Christian background it might be a bit easier.

There is a FIBIS Fibiwiki page Malaysia https://wiki.fibis.org/w/Malaysia This was written from the viewpoint of records of persons of British background but born in Malaysia, but some aspects are more general.

National Registration Department, Ministry of Home Affairs is responsible for birth , marriage and death registration, which has been long established. However registration is based on local areas, so you do need to know geographic details. I suspect unless you know certain details it would almost be impossible.

You can also try the FamilySearch Wiki page for Malaysia. It doesn't look like FamilySearch has many, if any collections for Malaysia. But you can click on the links on the right under Malaysia Wiki Topics to help you get started with some research strategies. Here's the link: https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Malaysia_Genealogy
