Hyphens, and ditto marks, are used to show that the current entry has the same last name as the one prior, —John T is indexed as:
Given Name: John T
Surname: Eagen
John T has the same last name as Eagen Bros.0

There are a couple of things that you need know about this project
The people that are with business listings; M P Eagen in the Eagen Bros. listing, are not indexed. John T Eagen should be your 1st entry.
This is from Project Instruction/What To Remewmber About This project:
Some images have businesses listed with residential listings. Do not index the information of businesses into the data entry area. Index only residential information. Further, do not index names of people associated with a business listing.Every field is required. To blank out the fields you do not see in the batch, blank out that field, but do not type blank, or any vartion of. To blank out the unused fields, either with a Ctrl + B or clicking the fourth icon from the left on your toolbar. If you do not do this, you will have a lot of failed Quality Checks.
