Recommended practice is to start with yourself and what you know about your parents and grandparents. Then, gradually build your tree, one step at a time, verifying as you go. You may find, as many of us have, that your family came from many different places.

Yes, it's really one step at a time. What do you know about your mother? What more can you find out from her or from relatives or others that know her? How about your father?

You'll be discovering your family story.
