If you are indexing a City Directory, only the first listing of list of exact duplicate entries, is indexed. If you have indexed multiple duplicates, go to the second duplicate; ie there are 4 John Smiths, all the same, and you've indexed all of the duplicates, do the following:

Go to the first duplicate (entry #2 on John Smith), and delete the Given Name.
On your toolbar, click this icon.

    FireShot Capture 109 - Indexing Tool — FamilySearch.org - www.familysearch.org.png

When you click that, the empty field will apply to the rest of the Given Name fields in your batch.

However…if you have 4 John Smiths, but two of them have spouses that have different names, say Agnes and Mabel, you will index those John Smith, since they are not exact duplicates, then delete the Given Names duplicates that do not have spouses.
